With an estimated $29 billion in assets, Africa-based pension funds are a vital fundraising pool for asset managers looking for capital to deploy across the continent. Private equity offers pension funds a long-term investment opportunity with diversification and the potential to outperform.

While the regulatory guidelines in each country vary, recent reforms in some of Africa’s key markets are beginning to make it possible for local institutional investors to participate in the asset class.

This is according to a recent report by the African Development Bank’s Making Finance Work for Africa, the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA).
